Pretty good article, here:
http://www.newsweek.com/2010/10/17/how-tea-partiers-get-the-constitution-wrong.html
As usual, good ol' Tom Jeff puts it best:
In a letter to a friend in 1816, he mocked “men [who] look at constitutions with sanctimonious reverence, and deem them like the arc of the covenant, too sacred to be touched”; “who ascribe to the men of the preceding age a wisdom more than human, and suppose what they did to be beyond amendment.” “Let us follow no such examples, nor weakly believe that one generation is not as capable as another of taking care of itself, and of ordering its own affairs,” he concluded. “Each generation is as independent as the one preceding, as that was of all which had gone before.” Amen.

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

This is the form email (I was lazy and didn't personalize it) I sent to Bush and Cheney today.
---------------
The Senate Judiciary Committee has asked you nine times to tell them the full truth about the domestic spying program. Now, they have issued subpoenas demanding the legal justification behind the program. Please comply with the subpoenas. These subpoenas are not asking for sensitive operational details about the program. All the Senate Judiciary Committee wants to know is your legal rationale for spying on Americans without warrants. As a taxpayer and a voter, I want to know what happened. I want to know if my government is spying on me without a warrant, and I want to know your legal justification, if any, for ordering spying without warrants on any American. This program has been in the press since 2005. We know you have the documents, and we know the program exists because you publicly admitted it. It's time for you to release these documents to the public. Again, please comply with the subpoenas. No one is above the law. I am proud to be an American. I love my country, and I believe we can be both safe and free. But only if everyone follows the law, including you.

This is a quick summary done by a guy on a message board I frequent: http://p076.ezboard.com/fwarmongerboardfrm29.showMessage?topicID=595.topic
The more, the crazier -- US Attorneys -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So the more that comes out, the nastier and nastier this thing looks.
At first glance, it was just petty. Illegal, unethical, and threatening to turn New Mexico blue for a generation, but mostly just a bunch of petty firings of attorneys who refused to be partisan *enough*.
But then the shyte gets more complicated, and now there's layers upon layers. Like Donkey's discussion of parfait in "Shrek", but not funny family fare.
(1) Two, maybe three, of the guys really were fired for incompetence. They really did suck. But it turns out that they were *added to the list* at the last minute to provide cover for the firing of the five that did NOT suck.
And note that ALL of these guys were loyal Bushies. I guess the five competent ones were stupid enough to think that Bush valued "competence" more than "sheer blind loyalty".
(2) The Justice Department e-mails have Rove and Miers and Gonzales *all involved* in the decision. But guess what's missing? a 3-week chunk of e-mails is basically not present. And those three weeks correspond to the three weeks right before the firings, the three weeks during which Miers states that she needs to "wait for the President to weigh in" because at the time (if you forget), El Presidente was busy clearing brush in Texas in another of his lengthy vacations.
So in other words, POTUS is basically implicated in something so illegal that the founding fathers are rolling in the fucking graves. This is like Iran-Contra and Reagan -- only about ten times bigger.
And the rats on the sinking ship know this. So instead of implicating POTUS, we've got a mysterious 3-week gap.
(3) And here's the cake, boys and girls: Tim Griffin.
Note that name: Tim Griffin.
Who is Tim Griffin?
He's Karl Rove's made man. He's a political hatchet-man for Rove, through-and-through.
He's a specialist on oppo research. He's one of the "genius" guys behind Rove's negative-attack-ad bullshit. He's one of the guys who (i) implied that a AG candidate was a child molester, (ii) a paralyzed Vietnam Vet was a lying hippie fake, (iii) a decorated Vietnam volunteer was a piece of wind-surfing Commie scum, (iv) a GOP pres candidate was a rapist and child molester.
Rove does like his "child molester" and "hippie Commie" attack ads.
Tim Griffin, though, also happens to be a lawyer.
In that e-mail dump from DOJ, "Tim Griffin" pops up over and over and over again. Turns out that he was one of the guys that Rove and the White House wanted (more than anything!) to be a US Attorney. Turns out that he was one of the guys that *everyone* in DOJ figured was a 'done deal'. Turns out that he was one of the very very first guys who was going to take advantage of that hidden clause in the Patriot Act that allowed El Presidente to pick replacement US Attorneys without a confirmation. Turns out that Tim Griffin was hand-picked to replace the guy -- whoever the hell he was, however the hell competent or not he was -- that was in East Arkansas.
Turns out that this was discussed as early as late 2005.
So, follow the jumping ball, folks:
It's 2005. POTUS calls Arlen Spector, GOP lapdog and at the time head of the Senate Committee reviewing the renewal of the Patriot Act. Arlen sneaks in the provision about "replacing US Attorneys".
Why?
Because Karl Rove's hatchet-man Tim Griffin, needs to be assigned to East Arkansas.
Why not just fire the guy already there and have a streamlined confirmation (in the GOP-controlled Congress!) for Tim Griffin?"
Because a confirmation process would bring attention to the fact that Tim Griffin does oppo research. And that's a scary thought: a guy with the full legal and subpeona powers of the Federal Government doing oppo research. Hitting up your former neighbors with FBI investigations, all to find out the dirt on you. Maybe even investigations of child molestation. Which, remember, is Rove & Co's favorite tactic. Who cares if there's no evidence? Just the hint of an investigation of this sort of crime will destroy a person's life, for fucking ever.
So yeah, a confirmation hearing would make it hard to sneak a political assassin into the US Attorney position. People'd catch wind of it. But what if it was done in the dead of night, and hidden among seven other firings (all of which have their own reasons, of course -- no need to be inefficient about this!)
Okay, then, WHY the hell would you want an oppo research in East Arkansas?
Seriously, you have to ask that question? That's where a woman named "Hillary Clinton" spent most of her adult life.
=========
Follow the bouncing ball:
Karl Rove, the soul-less political manipulator that put Bush in the TX Governor's office, and then the POTUS slot, will literally stop at NOTHING to get his guy elected.
Literally. Nothing. No matter how unethical, immoral, and illegal. Not a goddamn thing. Don't believe it? Ask Max Cleland. Ask fucking JOHN MCCAIN.
Tim Griffin is Karl Rove's right-hand man.
Karl came up with a *brilliant* plan for putting one of his top oppo guys into a position to do oppo research against the obvious Democratic Presidential front-runner, and figured out how to do it by early 2005.
He sneaks a provision into the Patriot Act that allows the White House (= him) to put his own assassin into position to do the oppo research with the full powers of a US Attorney and the FBI at his disposal.
All done on the down-low because it was so fucking wrong that Rove didn't even trust the lackey rubber-stamping yes-men in Congress to get near it. THAT'S how fucking bad this was.
And all to stick it to the Dems.
==========
So really, this pretty much crystalizes where the modern GOP is: so long as guys like Rove (and his proteges) are in power, the GOP has one, and only one, principle:
Continued political power justifies all means.
El Presidente is up to his fucking eyeballs in this, make no mistake. This makes Nixon and his fucking Watergate scandal look like a practical joke. I suspect that we're going to discover that this administration is so scandal-ridden and corrupt that it might even challenge Hoover for the most corrupt administration in US history.
And that's not even talking about its amazing incompetence and foreign policy DISASTERS.
I still don't think that Buchanan (= responsible for US Civil War) can be topped. But my god, El Presidente and his merry bunch of fucktards really does seem to be trying for the Gold Ring.
